A fairytale ending in what was an incredible season, Bishop’s Stortford 5s secured the league title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Hertford 4s. In a season that included picking up 16 points from loosing positions, 8 wins in a row and a 10 game unbeaten run it was the perfect ending to a fantastic season!
At the start of the day both teams were tied at the top of the table on 47 points, so the stakes couldn’t have been higher. The winner of this contest would claim the league title, while the loser would miss out on promotion entirely.
From the very first whistle, Hertford were on the front foot, catching Stortford off guard with an early goal from a short corner. However, Stortford quickly regained composure and responded tenaciously. After 10 minutes, Vernon Brown made his mark, finding the back of the net with a precise short corner strike that leveled the game at 1-1. It wasn’t long before Stortford took the lead. A deflection off James Nash’s stick saw the ball fly past the Hertford keeper, putting Stortford ahead 2-1. But Hertford, determined not to go down without a fight, equalised shortly after, showing their resilience and ability to match the intensity of the game.
The true turning point came just five minutes before halftime. Some beautiful build-up play through the midfield, found its way to the deadly duo of Brown and Nash. The two combined expertly, with Nash putting the ball past the off balanced keeper to bag his 42nd goal of the season and send Stortford into the break with a crucial 3-2 lead.
The second half was a nerve-wracking affair, with both sides pressing for the next goal, but neither side could find the back of the net. Hertford threw everything at Stortford, but thanks to some exceptional defending and a composed team effort, the away side held firm.
Player of the season, Will Fox was a standout performer for Stortford, showing his relentless energy and strength. His tireless runs and ability to win the ball back time and time again made him a constant threat. Fox’s work rate was truly extraordinary and was a key factor in Stortford’s victory. Marcus Taylor, too, played a pivotal role in defence, making crucial tackles and clearances that denied Hertford any clear-cut chances.
Matt Seaman’s work rate was unmatched, and he played a key part in creating numerous opportunities for Stortford, never once backing down from the challenge. His performance was a fitting tribute to the team’s collective efforts this season.
With the final whistle blowing, Bishop’s Stortford 5s finished the season with 50 points— securing their league title and promotion to Division 4SW, the highest league this team has ever played in! The team’s incredible turnaround from last season, is a testament to their growth, determination and team spirit.
