Bernie Cotton MBE

Alongside teaching Geography at Bishops Stortford College and Bedford School, I played hockey for England and Great Britain from 1969-1980 in a 127 cap career that included the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. I then coached the England U18 team; was Assistant Manager and a coaching member of the management team for the men’s hockey Olympic Gold medal in Seoul 1988 before becoming full-time, professional Team Manager for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

After a brief return to life as a schoolmaster in Bishops Stortford, I took up the position as Olympic Performance Manager at the British Olympic Association in 1997 where I headed the Team Leader Training Programme in preparation for the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. I was a member of the Sydney HQ staff; was Director of the Barcelona Holding Camp pre-Athens; had responsibility for planning and delivering the pre-Beijing Holding Camp in Macau in 2008.

During London 2012, I was on the Team GB HQ staff in the Olympic Village with particular responsibility for the sports of basketball, handball, table tennis, volleyball and, of course, hockey. I retired after London 2012 and was fortunate enough to be awarded the MBE for services to Olympic sport in 2013.

In retirement, I have been proud to be President of Bishops Stortford Hockey Club.

Married to Jane since 1972 with two sons James now aged 44 and Alastair 42.

Duncan Barber

I have dedicated some 50 years of my life to trying to improve my hockey (with limited success) – all at BSHC apart from school hockey and a brief spell at university.

I played first team for a few years many years ago and fourth team is about my level now.

Have worked with some of the Junior sides and also have become a part time umpire in recent years. I’ve captained the 4s then the 3s and been Mens Club Captain.

I’m a lawyer by trade but enjoy getting away from that on the weekend!

BSHC has provided me with some great times and opportunities both on and off the pitch – now trying to put something back into the club!

Amy Duffy

Club Secretary

My name is Amy Duffy and I am a self-confessed hockey addict, you can find me currently playing for the ladies 5’s but also summer league, mixed and indoor. I am a defender but have been known to play in goal on the odd occasion.

This is my sixth season playing for BSHC, and fourth season as Club Secretary,  I have also been ladies 4’s captain on two separate seasons.

What can I say about me, I am very organised,  enjoy structure and have a background in governance which helps when minuting the committee meetings. I have been kept occupied in my role as Club Secretary, not only with the implementation of GDPR but also helping the club become affiliated to ClubMark. For my input with both ‘projects’ I was awarded the Veil Varton Cup this season (2019) which came to a complete surprise to me.

When I am not running around the hockey pitch I can be found socialising (chatting) in the clubhouse, please feel free to come and say hello.

Peter Duffy

I am Pete Duffy and I am probably in a unique position as part of the committee in that I have never played Hockey in my life.

After playing over 20 years of Rugby and moving to the local area I was enjoying watching my wife Amy playing for BSHC before one fateful day when I was introduced to DT and the rest as they say is history. Before i knew it I was an umpire and the following year I was asked to fill a vacancy on the committee all for the cost of a few beers.

A bit about me, I love all sports and after playing rugby for so long at a club run by volunteers similar to BSHC I enjoy give something back to such a great community club. I have been a qualified chartered accountant for over 20 years’ so hopefully I bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the club. I also think I am organized and efficient although my wife often has a different view.

I know a lot of you won’t know me yet but if I do umpire you please go easy, I am still learning, and I am always happy to debate a decision back in the clubhouse or talk about any other sport.

Pippa Bull

Safeguarding Officer

Hi, I’m Pippa Bull and I have been a member of the club for over 40 years! I have held many positions over the years including 1st Team Captain, Masters Captain, Ladies Club Captain and Junior Coach. I am still an active playing member and can be found playing 2’s, Masters and summer league.

I am currently the Clubs Welfare Officer. I have been an active member of the coaching team, focusing generally on the youngest age group and have worked in many of the local primary schools coaching hockey and promoting BSHC. My background is primary education and working for a local authority’s Children’s Services which has provided me with a wealth of experience in the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people. Although it is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard children my role is to implement the child welfare section of the club’s development plan ensuring policies and procedures are in place and fit for purpose. I particularly work closely with the junior coaching team vetting all coaches and volunteers.

I also provide a link to our new partners at the Herts and Essex as a I’m a Trustee of the Multi Academy Trust, and support the effective liaison between the two.

Jack Wheaton

Men’s Club Captain

I’m Jack and I first joined the club in 2007 and have played most of my hockey here in the 1s, originally as a forward, but now in defence. I’m known for being a hockey badger and for showing the forwards how to score goals.

I’ve been involved with lots of coaching within the club, including juniors, ladies section and currently running the men’s club training. Outside of the club I played for 5 seasons in New Zealand and would love to go back and play over there again.

I’m a farmer so will go missing in the summer, but once harvest is finished I spend most of my time either out walking the dog or around the club. Off the pitch I can be found in the clubhouse or normally on my way for a curry, feel free to have a chat anytime.

Richard Temple (DT)

Fixture Secretary

Most people know me as DT. I came back to hockey at a relatively late age having switched from rugby. I have played regularly for every team in the men’s section.

I have captained Mens’ 4s, 5s, Ladies’ 3s and mixed teams. I have also been captain of the Ladies section for three years and correlated with the ‘annus mirabilis’ of 2019-20 where the section won four championships with another team promoted.

I have coached at U12/U14/U16 girls at club and school level. I started and have run Back to Hockey for over ten years’ too. Occasionally, I also umpire in the HBHUA pool too when duty requires. I am currently fixtures and league liaison secretary having filled the role since 2007.

Duncan Laws

Men’s Rep

Hi, my name is Duncan Laws and I’m the Men’s Section Representative on the Club Committee. This is my 10th Year at Bishop’s Stortford and, while I’ve previously been a Club Captain, these days you can mostly find me playing for the Men’s 5’s, or mixed, or summer league… or pretty much any team who needs someone to help out.

When I’m not out and about on the hockey pitch, I can often be found running the highways & byways of Stortford or just making the most of the clubhouse – if you’d like to know more about what goes on at the committee, or have a point you would like to see raised, please feel free to reach out.

Adam Farley

Social Secretary

I’m Adam and have been at the club since 2016. I’ve been playing hockey since at school and started in defence, though now moved up to being a forward!

If you want to find me I’ll be either on pitch hitting a ball for the Men’s 1s and then afterwards I’ll be in the clubhouse! I’ll never turn down a drink or two, maybe even a limoncello?

I’m all about getting the entire club involved in a social, I’m sure you’ll have seen me at the Awards Night or the Quiz Night! If not, then why not?

I also manage the clubs website and social media accounts (Plug to follow them here… Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube)
